The formula

How net pay is calculated

01

Pension contribution

5% of gross pay is withheld for the pension fund. The employer pays another 5% on top of gross pay; that amount is not taken from the employee.

02

Wage tax

It is charged on taxable pay (gross minus 5%). At the primary employer: 0% up to €250, 8% on the part from €250 to €450 and 10% on the part above €450. A secondary employer withholds 10% of all taxable pay.

03

Net pay and cost

Net = gross − contribution − tax. Employer cost = gross + 5%. For €800 gross: €40 contribution, €47 tax, €713 net and €840 cost.
